I have reviewed Robus tripods here before. If you read that review, you already know that the Robus RC-5570 Vantage Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod is my new favorite. But sometime you need TWO tripods – for instance if you want to have a second camera rolling or you want to take the smallest, lightest one you have for one job, and the biggest, heaviest one you have for another.
So I added a second tripod to the family! The Robus RC-5558 Vantage Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod is very similar to the larger, 5570. It has the same general build quality, accessories, etc. It has slightly different stats.
- Load Capacity: 55 lb
- Maximum Height: 58.5″
- Minimum Height: 3.7″
- Folded Length: 22.5″
- Leg Sections: 4
- Weight: 5.2 lb
- 10x Carbon Fiber Construction
- Lock & Safety Pull Latch in Spider
- Interchangeable Top Plate & Video Bowl
- Modular Rubber, Wide & Spiked Feet
The big difference is that this new tripod is smaller – and lighter and isn’t as tall.
It is 5.2 lbs instead of 5.6 lbs. And its maximum height is 58.5″ v. 70.1″. The folded height is almost two full inches shorter and the minimum height is 3/10ths of an inch shorter. In short, it’s the “Mini Me” to the larger 5570.
I will use this for a second camera mount when I need one and in cases where I don’t need a 70-inch tall tripod. The advantage for those of you who don’t want two tripods and don’t need the height of the 5570 is that you can carry something slightly smaller, lighter and less expensive. At $499.95, the 5558 is $50 less expensive but you get the very same high-quality of the more expensive unit, just in a smaller unit.
Interestingly enough, both tripods are rated to carry 55 lbs which is more than enough for even most big DSLR shooters.
Both tripods lack a center column and the base is nice and wide. This adds stability no matter what you mount on top. I find the tripod equally suited to both video and still photography.
I am convinced that you can SPEND twice as much for one of the big-named tripods, but I will bet my bottom dollar you can’t BUY twice as much for that money. The value of the more famous brands is not sufficient to warrant the big price difference.
I can have any tripod I want and I want this one because it’s just so well designed and executed and priced. It’s VERY well made. It literally has every feature I am looking for in a tripod. It will last longer than I will and based on its relatively low price, but high value, I rate it as HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
