Picture Methods Podcast 2020 Episode 6

Thanks for joining me on the flagship podcast of the PictureMethods blog where we deliver free insights and inspiration for photographers. The show drops on the first Friday of each month.

I am not a political person, but then again, I do not consider the murder of an unarmed African American man in Minneapolis by a police officer to be a political issue. It’s a human issue. And I am hopeful that everyone in my audience can at least share that view.

Photography is a very personal thing to me. It’s been a part of my life for about 50 years. I hold everything about it, including the people who we call photographers, to be sacred. I may not agree with you. I may not even like you. But if you’re a photographer, you and I have common ground and it’s most likely that we can get along.

I grew up in a mixed-race neighborhood and a mix-raced school system. It wasn’t until I got to college that I found out about racism. Many of my lifelong friends are Black. I couldn’t then and I don’t now, understand it.

Some of my favorite people in the photo industry…people I admire and look up to, happen to be African American. When it comes to clicking the shutter, it shouldn’t matter what color you are, what religion you practice, what your gender is, whether or not you’re young or old, tall or short, fat or skinny, rich or poor, college educated or not; when it comes to clicking that shutter button, WE ARE ALL EQUALS. If you cannot agree with that statement, then I highly doubt your photography will ever transcend the noisy world we live in. My pal Rick Sammon says, if you want to be a better photographer, be a better human. So this short episode of the Picture Methods Podcast is here to serve as a reminder. I stand with all those in the African American community of photographers and I am here to help you in any way I can.

And I can think of no better way to both illustrate and celebrate that point than with my guest this month.

Ant Pruitt is a photographer, an educator, a host and a producer at TWiT.tv. You can find his podcast there at https://twit.tv/shows/hands-on-photography.

His YOUTUBE channel can be found here – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI99H5CLLbAYpTgJyXeCwTw

I am proud to have a chance to introduce him to all of you here on this episode. Consider him a permanent friend of the PictureMethods family. It’s my hope that you’ll see and hear more from him on these pages in the coming months.

In the mean time, open your mind and your heart to the possibility that especially when it comes to photography, there is more that connects us than separates us.

Wrapping up…

Next month, I have a special all bird-photography show. My guest will be Alan Murphy who is one of the best bird photographers on the planet. Instead of a short interview, we will do the whole show together so don’t miss it.

  1. Enjoyed the show. Again, thanks for the encouragement and positive vibes. I want to post a photo for this month’s Platypod contest, but I can’t figure out how to upload the photo from my Photos library to your comments section, as you mentioned in the show. Thoughts/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  2. Thanks Scott

The only thing that is different between people is “How we Think”

Thank you Scott sometimes you come up with some real pearls.

  3. Hi Scott. I enjoyed your podcast with Ant Pruitt. I’ve listened to him many times on Leo Laporte’s TWiT. He has such a calming, reassuring voice. Put the both of you together and you’d make the ultimate stress-reliever team! I would like to enter your “housebound photo contest”. I can’t see how to attach a photo, but I saw in another reply that I should simply email it to you?

  4. Sorry to bother you again, Scott. Where can I find your email address? Your Contact page only has a form that doesn’t accept attachments.

  5. I have to thank you for what you do. Your podcast is a much needed inspiration every time. Because of the craziness going on I find myself not driving as much, and thus I got a bit behind in my listening. So I know that my entry is probably too late, but I just emailed two shots of a steaming cup of “Joe” per your photo assignment. I wanted to put them here, but couldn’t figure out how to attach an image… Anyway, THANK YOU!
