Portfolio Reviews

Improve your photography

CRITIQUE – (NOUN) A DETAILED ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT OF SOMETHING. SYNONYMS INCLUDE ANALYSIS, EVALUATION, ASSESSMENT, APPRAISAL, APPRECIATION, CRITICISM, REVIEW, STUDY, COMMENTARY, EXPOSITION, EXEGESIS.

CRITIQUE – (VERB) EVALUATE A THEORY OR PRACTICE IN A DETAILED AND ANALYTICAL WAY.

If you want to improve your photography, a photo workshop is one of the best investments you can make. But if time, travel, or monetary limitations prevent that, you can invest in portfolio reviews.

This can be done no matter where you are located or where I am located.

Actionable advice to build your portfolio

If you want a professional critique from a working pro, you can get a quick idea of the state of your work, where you need improvement, and what your next steps should be to move your photographic career forward.

My overall approach to critiques is to pull no punches, but to offer my ideas with only one intention—to help you advance your photography. When I tell you what’s wrong with an image, I will tell you why. I will try to avoid personal bias, but if I have a bias, I will disclose it so you can take it into account. I will offer advice and direction in every critique. All critiques are 100% confidential—between you and me—unless YOU decide to share the information.

Portfolio review topics include:

  • Exposure
  • Composition
  • Distracting elements
  • Composition
  • Lens choice
  • Color casts
  • Overall sharpness
  • Backgrounds
  • Mood
  • Specific problems with each photo (if any)
  • Redeeming qualities of each photo
  • Questions

Each session allows for approximately two to three minutes per photo. (Remember I will have spent time with your photos before we speak.)

If you want longer critiques, you can double the amount of time we spend discussing your photos for double the fee. Generally, if you are concise and allow me to use my normal processes, we can accomplish a great deal in 15 to 20 minutes.

How it works

All portfolio review clients receive a questionnaire to fill out. As part of the process, I collate your answers and start analyzing where you are in your career and with your goals. Then I propose a plan to help you achieve your goals as fast as possible.

You send your images (high-resolution JPG files) to me for review at least one week ahead of your scheduled session.

Suggested size is 2480 pixels on the longest side – 96PPI. sRGB color space—JPEG ONLY PLEASE!

I look at your images before our session, make notes, and review your questionnaire. We then schedule a Skype call or a phone call for an in-depth discussion of your images.

Critique fee

The fee is $39 for eight images. Additional images are $5 each.

Payment information

All sessions must be prepaid. If you schedule a session and have to re-schedule, there is an additional $25 fee, which also must be prepaid. Missing a second session voids your registration and there are no refunds.

All sessions must be prepaid by check or money order and made payable in U.S. funds. Make check or money order out to New Media Methods, LLC.
